After I got the hang of midi sequencing, the next big step in the way I composed was the use of a digital audio workstation, specifically, Cool Edit Pro.  It allowed for a few dozen tracks of audio, so the arrangements started getting more dynamic, and the final tracks had more shine and polish.  Sometimes the technology got in the way though, and I would head back to the four track for instant gratification.
